A No-Nonsense Guide to Lube

What’s What and When to Use What

Lube is a game-changer if you’re just getting started or consider yourself a connoisseur of personal pleasure. It's not just about “making things easier”—it’s about reducing friction, enhancing sensation, supporting your body, and customizing your experience. But with so many types and buzzwords, it can get confusing fast. So let’s break it down.

This guide walks you through the main categories of lube and intimacy serums, how and when to use them, what to look out for, and which Head South intimacy serums you should try. We’ll also share a few personal favorites for areas we don’t cover yet.

Water-Based Serums

Best for: All-purpose use, toys, latex condoms, and easy clean-up.
Texture: Lightweight, slick, fast-absorbing.

Water-based serums are the most versatile—great for solo play, partnered sex, or toy time. They're body-safe, easy to clean, and typically the most compatible with other materials. The only downside? They can dry out quicker than other types, especially if you're in it for the long haul.

Try: Slip Serum by Head South
Slip Serum is water-based and designed to create a smooth and friction-free experience. It's pH-balanced, cleans up easily, and is beginner-friendly. Additionally, it's toy and latex friendly, contains no added color, fragrance, or flavor, and is safe to use during oral play. Slip Serum is also vegan and gluten-free

Silicone Based Serums

Best for: Water play (e.g., shower or bath), long-lasting lubrication, anal sex.
Texture: Luxurious cushion, silky, and long-lasting.

Silicone-based lubricants are known for their longevity and water-resistant properties, making them ideal for use in wet environments. They provide a smooth glide that doesn't dry out quickly. However, they should not be used with silicone sex toys, as they can degrade the material.

Try:  Slide Serum by Head South
Slide Serum is a silicone-based serum with a thicker consistency for more control and less mess. It's water-resistant, never sticky or tacky, and latex-friendly. Slide Serum contains no added colors, fragrances, or flavors, and is both vegan and gluten-free. Please note: Avoid using Slide Serum with silicone toys.

Oil-Based Serums

Best for: Sensual massages, external stimulation, and those seeking natural ingredients.
Texture: Rich, moisturizing, and long-lasting.

Oil-based lubricants are excellent for massages and can provide a natural feel. However, they are not compatible with latex condoms, as oils can weaken latex and increase the risk of breakage. They may also be more challenging to clean up and can stain fabrics.

Try:  Oasis Oil by Head South
Oasis Oil is a nourishing oil designed for soothing body massages and calming touch. It's hydrating, perfect for mindful relaxation or partner care, and serves as a versatile addition to your self-care routine. Oasis Oil is silicone toy-friendly, soothes dry skin, has anti-inflammatory properties, and is a great skin conditioner. It's also vegan and gluten-free.
Please note: Avoid using Oasis Oil with condoms.

Hybrid Lubricants

Best for: Combining benefits of both water and silicone-based lubricants.
Texture: Smooth and cushion-y, offering longevity with easy cleanup.

Hybrid lubricants blend water and silicone to provide longer-lasting lubrication than water-based options while remaining easier to clean than pure silicone-based lubes. They offer a balance between the two types, providing versatility for various sexual activities.

Note: Head South does not currently offer a hybrid formula, but one of our favorite tricks is mixing a pump of Slip with a pump of Slide in your hand before applying. This DIY combo gives you full control over the consistency and feel—add more Slip for a lighter texture or more Slide for extra endurance and cushion. It's a customizable approach that lets you tailor the experience to your body, your toys, and the moment.

CBD-Infused Lubricants

Best for: Potential relaxation and increased sensation.
Texture: Varies depending on the base (water or oil).

CBD-infused lubricants are gaining popularity for their potential to enhance relaxation and increase blood flow, potentially leading to heightened sensation. However, individual experiences may vary, and more research is needed to fully understand their effects.

Head South does not currently offer a CBD-infused lubricant. But here are a few of our favorites:

Cleanup

Proper cleanup after using lubricants ensures comfort and maintains hygiene. Water-based lubricants like Slip Serum clean up easily with water, while silicone and oil-based lubricants may require mild soap and water. Using body-safe wipes can also be a convenient option for quick cleanup. We recommend Play by Personal Fav
