Filipino Heritage Month: Addressing sexual health in the Filipino community

Filipino History Month is a great time to reflect on the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines, including its views on sexuality and the evolving importance of sexual health in the Filipino community.

Head South is founded by Cat Meyer- a proud Filipina American Woman.

Historically, Filipino sexuality has been shaped by pre-colonial values, colonization, and religious influence. Pre-colonial Filipinos were more open about gender roles and sexuality, with some indigenous communities recognizing multiple gender identities and sexual orientations. However, Spanish colonization introduced Catholicism, which imposed conservative views on sexuality. This influence is still seen today in many aspects of Filipino culture, where discussions about sex are often stigmatized, and topics like contraception, premarital sex, and LGBTQ+ rights can be controversial.

In recent years, there has been a growing movement within the Filipino community to address sexual health in a more progressive and open way. This includes advocating for comprehensive sexual education, access to reproductive health services, and more inclusive conversations about sexuality that reflect the diverse experiences of Filipinos, including LGBTQ+ individuals. The Reproductive Health Law, passed in 2012, marked a significant step in ensuring access to contraception and maternal health services, though challenges remain in its implementation due to resistance from conservative sectors.

Addressing sexual health in the Filipino community is crucial for many reasons:

  1. Breaking the Stigma: Open discussions about sex help reduce the stigma associated with sexual health, which can lead to better education and awareness. This is especially important in combating the spread of STIs, reducing teen pregnancies, and promoting healthy relationships.
  1. Mental and Emotional Well-being: Acknowledging and addressing sexual health concerns, such as consent, boundaries, and sexual orientation, contributes to overall mental and emotional well-being. In a culture where "hiya" (shame) often prevents open dialogue, creating safe spaces for these conversations is essential.
  1. LGBTQ+ Inclusion: Filipino society is slowly becoming more accepting of LGBTQ+ identities, though there is still work to be done. By promoting sexual health education that includes discussions on sexual orientation and gender identity, the community can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all Filipinos.
  1. Cultural Preservation: Returning to the roots of pre-colonial Filipino views on sexuality, which were often more fluid and accepting, can inspire a more holistic and culturally sensitive approach to sexual health today.
